Handle consistency: one name across X, YouTube, TikTok and Instagram

Got a Name in Mind? See If It's Free
App Store, Google Play, domains, handles and dev namespaces in one search.
People find brands by typing the handle they remember from a different platform. If you're @lumenapp on X and @lumen.focus on Instagram, you've made your users do a search every time. Consistency beats cleverness.
Check handles before the domain
A parked domain has an owner and a price. A dormant handle has an owner who registered it in 2011 and never logged in again, and the platform won't transfer it to you. So find the handle that's free everywhere first, then pick the domain around it.
Length limits
- X: 15 characters. The tightest, and the one that forces most abbreviations.
- TikTok: 24 characters.
- Instagram: 30 characters.
- YouTube: 30 characters, handles start with @ and were introduced in 2022.
- GitHub: 39 characters.
If your name is over 15 characters, decide now what the X version will be, and use that everywhere.
When one network is taken
Add a consistent suffix on every network, not just the taken one. "app", "hq" and "get" are the usual choices: @lumenapp, @lumenhq, @getlumen. Pick one and apply it everywhere, even on networks where the bare name was free. The whole point is that people can guess.
Avoid underscores and dots. They're allowed on some networks and not others, they're hard to say aloud, and they look like a workaround because they are one.
How reliable are automated checks
YouTube has an official API and returns a definitive answer. TikTok can usually be checked by loading the profile page. X and Instagram actively block automated requests, so any tool's answer for those is a guess with a link to confirm. NameHQ labels those results as unverified rather than pretending, and gives you the direct link.
Claim them the same day
Create the accounts as soon as you've decided, even if you won't post for months. It takes ten minutes and it's the cheapest insurance a brand can buy.
